Looks like New England’s prayers have been answered.
The Patriots are slapping the franchise tag on quarterback Matt Cassel, according to ESPN.com.
The move, which Pats fans seem to have been calling for since mid-season, provides New England with a solid contingency plan if veteran starter Tom Brady, recovering from a slew of knee surgeries, isn’t ready to go in ’09. The 26-year-old was a pleasant surprise, posting a passer rating of 89.4 on the season while throwing for 3,693 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
If Brady does return, Cassel will be a prime target for trades from the host of NFL teams in need of a starting quarterback. I do not know, if this is a good thing(it could put a curse on him, or leave the Pats, with a 2nd qb, who is almost worth, as much as it's star #1 QB. We will have to waite, and see.
